Huge Minotaur Statue Found Submerged in Patagonia

A sculpture with a human body and a bull’s head – a Minotaur – was found along with a giant mask measuring 1.4 by 1 meter in a lake in Argentine Patagonia. Let’s understand now the whole truth about this discovery

Six meters from shore and four meters from the surface, easily visible and even easier to scare. The submerged statue measures one and a half meters high, weighs 250 kilos, has two horns and hides the heart behind a padlock like a safe. Many of those who visited Mari Menuco reported seeing a mysterious object submerged in the lake during the months of March and April.

According to LM Neuquen, a 23-year-old young man who did not want to reveal his identity and asked to be called Cristian, had gone kayaking on Sunday, April 10, when he noticed that there was something underwater. He turned his kayak and went back to see if that strange rock looked like anything.

“And then I saw it, it was a minotaur. At first it scared me. There are a lot of myths about that lake and we all laugh at them, but I think there’s a bit of truth to the stories,” the man told the local newspaper. All the doubts he had about supernatural beings were confirmed in that moment.

There was a minotaur submerged in the middle of the lake, luckily for Cristian and the people who live near the lake, this Minotaur is made of iron and cement.

Now that the Minotaur was located, could he reach out and touch it?

Cristian said he tried to dive down to the statue to get a better look. Eventually, he didn’t and returned to shore where he spoke with one of his cousins, and together they returned to the submerged minotaur.

“He didn’t believe me. At first, he told me I was kidding him, but I insisted so much that he agreed to go”, recalls Cristian.

Upon arriving, the 18-year-old cousin’s impression was the same as Cristian’s when he saw the statue. “I saw his terrified face and laughed. I told him “you didn’t believe me, there you go””

They jumped into the water and tried to dive in, but they didn’t touch the sculpture. None of them was prepared, nor did they have the equipment to do so.

“But we got to see it and that’s good,” said the 23-year-old, who returned to the region the following weekends and became obsessed with the subject.

“After that day, I became a fan of water,” he said.

Cristian started to investigate what a minotaur was doing submerged in a lake and found a possible story to explain it.

The Mapuche Culture

A group of indigenous peoples living in present-day south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina, including parts of Patagonia, are called the Mapuche.

Within the Mapuche worldview, there is something called “Gen Ko” which is a kind of protective energy for each place.

“Each element of nature has its own, and that’s why the Mapuche always ask permission to go into the water or cut down a tree. They ask Gen Ko for permission,” he explained.

Furthermore, within that same culture, when these natural elements feel attacked, they appear.

“I think we are doing a lot of damage to the environment and we have to take care of this. Have you seen how many oil wells there are around this lake? It’s a real problem and maybe that’s why someone put this minotaur in the lake. To warn that we are doing something wrong,” he explained.

Cristian returned to Lago Mari Menuco after two weeks and found explanations, ranging between logic and theory, and wanted to see the Minotaur again.

He went to the lake and his goal was to get down as close as possible to the minotaur. Although he got into the kayak and tried, he couldn’t. “Whoever created the sculpture, idealized it so that it could only be seen from above, without the need to go down”, said Cristian.

After trying several times, and after swimming to the Minotaur with friends, another discovery was made. There was another sculpture submerged in the lake; a gigantic mask.

Not far from the Minotaur, Cristian and his friends came across a gigantic face rising from the ground, measuring 1.40 meters by 1 meter. It was sculpted with a wide-open mouth, lined lips, and the words “Eternal Journey” engraved on the cheekbones.

Possible author?

After days of speculation in the Argentine press, the newspaper’s team found two local artists, who preferred to keep their identity confidential, and took responsibility for the pieces. They revealed to the publication that they installed the minotaur on February 19, 2022, with witnesses, but did not want to assume responsibility. “The important thing here is the works and not us”….
